WHAT TO DO
Hiking
This is serious hiking country! The Richtersveld offers some of the finest hiking in southern Africa, and the options are infinite. Big mountains, unspoilt wilderness and a lot of it. There are options for small hikes and walks and, of course, the adventurer can create numerous circuits for longer treks. Bear in mind that no trails have been laid out yet and that conditions can be rugged and weather extreme. Please contact the Conservancy Manager for more details on hiking.

4x4 driving

Hundreds of kilometres of dirt tracks with few (or no) people. This is the 4x4 haven of South Africa and the crux of the Namaqua 4x4 Route. Maps are essential and can be purchased at the Tourist Information Centre in Eksteenfontein. Please bear in mind the rules and please stay on the existing tracks. The reason 4x4 drivers love the Richtersveld is because it is unspoiled, remote country – so let’s keep it that way!

Camping

We are currently demarcating and signing campsites, but in the meantime contact the Eksteenfontein Tourist Information Centre for suggestions were you can camp, and to purchase a map of the conservancy. Bring all supplies may need and please remove all your rubbish.

Cultural Activities

The options are many for gaining some insight into an interesting way of life. Nama folk still herd their sheep into the far reaches of the Richtersveld, rotating between summer and winter outposts. Taste some homemade cooking, go on a donkeycart ride, buy lappies or homemade curtains from the Women’s Textile and Lappies Group, or just have a nice chat with one of the locals.

Science & Research

As biodiversity conservation is one of the cornerstones of the Conservancy, great importance is placed on facilitating research. The Rooiberg Research Station is currently being upgraded to provide a base for active research. Student groups are also encouraged to come to the Richtersveld. Please contact the Conservancy Manager about regulations surrounding research in the Conservancy.
